The main object of this website is to consolidate and develop the transfrontier cooperation, economic interaction and good-neighbourly relations between Karelia and Finland. The Chamber of Commerce of Northern Karelia (Finland) is a partner to The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Karelia Republic) in executing this project.



Russia and Finland settle land problem



People living in Saint-Petersburg and its suburbs who have purchased realty in Finland fear that the Russian President’s decree about ban on selling land plots and real estate located in the Russian frontier areas to foreigners may cause similar response in Finland. At the same time more than 5 thousands of Russians own cottages in Finland. Oleg Yakhontov, “Vesti FM” reporter in Saint-Petersburg, tried to find out if there is any reason for anxiety.

Jokinen: Realty deals of the Russians can be restricted



Deputy of the Coalition Party in Orimattila Kalle Jokinen is ready to restrict right of the Russians for purchasing land plots in Finland in case if Russia does not revoke the ban on selling land to foreigners in the frontier areas. Kalle Jokinen considers that Finland should better prefer renting land out to citizens of Russia instead of selling it.

Niinistö: Strange ban on selling land to foreigners



Chairman of the Finnish Parliament Sauli Niinistö (the Coalition Party) considers that the decision of Russia to prohibit selling land to foreigners is strange. During the morning program of YLE television and radio company at TV1 channel Mr. Niinistö stated that he have anticipated some discussion of this problem before taking the final decision. Russia prohibited selling land plots even those ones which are located far from the Finnish frontier.

Today’s editorial column of independent economic newspaper “Kauppalehti” is entitled “The Russian tourists replaced the British visitors”. Presumably during this New Year season 120 000 of the Russian tourists spent about 100 million euros in Finland. According to the research the Russian tourists are among the most solvent foreign visitors coming to Finland.

In November the President of Finland Tarja Halonen visited Russia. The visit was held in the atmosphere of openness and expectations. Among other issues Tarja Halonen and Dmitry Medvedev discussed prospects for abolishment of visa regime for the Russian citizens and facilitation of registration of foreigners in Russia.

The Presidents discussed problems of bilateral cooperation including those relating to economy, energy and transport; they also exchanged opinions on the European Security matters and abolition of visa regime between Russian and the European Union.

Petrozavodsk: a new center of employment and professional education in Finland is going to be found



Petrozavodsk city administration has recently held a meeting with coordinators of the Russian-Finnish joint project aimed at establishment of an information center which will provide people with data about employment and professional education in Finland. Cooperation prospects have been discussed by representatives of the city authorities, the Finnish project coordinator Tuire Lehikoinen, the Russian project coordinator Anna Loginova, the Deputy Director of Petrozavodsk employment center Sergey Svitskiy, member of friendship society “Karelia-Finland” Alexey Kindyak.

The Russian President’s working visit to Finland which finished yesterday was accompanied by warm weather and good mood. The way in which President of Finland met Dmitry Medvedev showed that relations between the two states are in a perfect condition. Interaction between Tarja Halonen and Dmitry Medvedev was characterized by natural concord. Despite shortness of the working visit the program included long and serious discussions about development of the two nations, international problems as well as important practical issues.

Today state investment company of Finland Suomen Teollisuussijoitus and the Russian state corporation ROSNANO signed an agreement to establish a program of joint investment in nanotechnologies. This was announced by ROSNANO press service.
